Eventually, age or a brief mistake in how you lift something will get you into trouble. Then you have to learn how to deal with the problems brought on by the pain.

Different remedies to lower back pain are grouped into categories based on the kind of person suffering, the nature of his or her work and the type of pain that is suffered. Some are meant to help you avoid pain while others have been proven to actually help some individuals lessen or even overcome their pain. Your best plan is to find those remedies that work for you and stick with them, rather than attempt to do all of them. Some will apply only to people with certain kinds of jobs. Others will not be necessary if you are already doing them.

Avoid Activities That Cause or Worsen Pain

Some of these tips are not going to be possible for everyone. Depending on your job, you simply may not be able to avoid certain activities. However, even in these cases, it is usually possible to make some sort of change to your schedule so that dangerous activities are reduced in number or in difficulty.

  • Avoid bending down. This will simply revive the pain in your lower back. The same may hold true for lifting and reaching, depending on just what muscles are damaged in your back. This even applies to your home activities. Avoid bending to put on or take off clothes. When you put on pants, remain standing with you back against a wall. Slide down a bit and bring up one knee. Then just step into your pants.
  • How you sleep may be heightening the pain in your back. In fact, a poor sleeping position may even be responsible for making you prone to the back injury in the first place. If you are the kind of person who lies on their side to go to sleep, try placing a pillow or other cushion between your knees. This will help keep your hips and spine in proper alignment and at least keep the problem from becoming aggravated while you sleep. If you lie on your back to sleep, try putting the pillow beneath your knees to accomplish the same alignment.
  • The way many people sit is also responsible for their back pain or, at least, for making them prone to back injury. Whenever you sit down on a chair or anything with an upright surface against your back, put a pillow, a cushion or even a rolled-up towel in the lower curve of your back to support the lumbar vertebrae there.
  • Stand or sit erect, without slouching. This is not just proper posture. It feels good and gives you a strong back. This will not only provide lower back pain relief, it will also help you avoid a recurrence of the problem.

Strengthen Your Back

Once lower back pain relief is required, do not just surrender to your ailing body. You can take measures to make your muscles stronger and less likely to cause you pain. However, you should take very small steps in this direction to avoid inflicting more damage on your muscles.

  • Begin strengthening your back by walking. It may sound overly simple but most people do not walk as much as they should and this leads to a variety of health problems, among them lower back pain. There is no need to overdo this and carry weights with you. That can come after you fully recover. To begin with, simply plan a regular walk of a moderate distance. Increase the amount of walking slowly as your back heals.
  • Ask a doctor or physical therapist about core stabilization. These exercises increase the strength of the muscles in your trunk. These muscles are sometimes the source of lower back pain. By strengthening them, you make it less likely that you will hurt them again.

Work Smart

Once you get back to work or have to return to certain unavoidable tasks at home, do it the right way. If your job requires you to lift things, you probably have plenty of leeway in deciding how you will lift. If you lift objects the right way you can avoid reviving the back pain and actually make yourself stronger and less likely to suffer injury in the future.

  • You have heard it before but you probably are not following this rule with the required discipline. Bend your knees when you lift.
  • Many people have heard about bending their knees before but they have not heard that they should also flex from their hips. Plenty of people make a pretense of bending their knees but then exert their back. Use your legs to lift.

Control Body Weight

Carrying extra pounds does not help you deal with your back pain. Even if your lower back pain is not directly due to your weight, you can often achieve lower back pain relief more easily by lowering your weight.

  • Improve your eating habits slowly. If you decide to go on an extreme diet after years of overeating, you are just guaranteeing failure. Make small changes that you can handle. After time passes, those small changes can add up and really bring about a change in your weight and in your overall health.
  • Increase the amount of physical activity in your daily life outside of work. Take this slowly to avoid causing more damage. The exercises do not have to be extreme. They should, however, be done on a daily basis.

Stop Smoking

This advice may surprise you. However, smoking limits recovery from any injury. Back pain is much more common in people who smoke than in those who do not. The toxins in cigarettes seem to prevent spinal discs from getting the needed nutrients for recovery. These discs are often responsible for causing people to seek lower back pain relief.
